Marbella's historic center is full of archaeological evidence that proves the existence of a Roman settlement. For example, the ashlars of the wall with the three Ionic capitals embedded in them, several discoveries in its streets, and some remains scattered throughout the town. In the surrounding area, we can also find Roman settlements along the Verde and Guadalmina rivers: the Roman villa of the Verde River, the Roman baths of Guadalmina, and the remains of the early Christian basilica of Vega de Mar, surrounded by a Visigothic necropolis, attest to the continued subsequent human presence in the area.

Regarding culture, Marbella has been the perfect venue for various festivals, such as the Marbella International Opera Festival, held in August since 2001; the Marbella Reggae Festival, held in July; and the Marbella International Jazz Festival, held in June at various locations throughout the city, including the beach, a boat, and the Old Town. Marbella International Film Festival, the Spanish Film Showcase, and the Independent Theater Festival are also held.
